An Inconvenient Truth

Went to the Sydney Film Festival on the weekend and saw An Inconvenient Truth.

I echo my buddy Vincenze, it’s “a must watch”.

If you’re like me and have a basic understanding of the global warming debate, this film provides a very clear understanding of what it’s all about and why it’s such an important issue.

I won’t go into the debate here, there’s plenty of info on Vincenze’s and other sites.

You can even catch an old version of the talk from which the film is based on here (warning: this version of the talk is far more political than the film).

There was one good quote from the film that has remained high in my consciousness. It related to why we need to change our attitudes and opinions and is very relevant to technology.

Totally paraphrasing but . . . “old attitudes and old technology has expected results which can be planned for. But old attitudes and new technology can have unexpected and potentially catastrophic results”.

Technology can be a magnificent and liberating thing if we only let ourselves evolve with it.

I will likely give it a miss. Not because I don’t care about the world we live in, I just don’t care for Al Gore.

I will admit, I don’t have an understanding of global warming, I mostly blog about how many questions most of what both sides have to say make me have.

    Hey Barbara,

I would like to pay you to go see this movie, transportation and refreshments included. Not because I have something to gain, but because this film, and Al Gore (whom I thought was pretty bland before) really inspired me.

The site http://sharethetruth.us has the aim of giving away tickets to this movie, no string attached. Share the Truth is not affiliated with any political party or candidates or corporation or organization or anything. It is NOT for profit. It was created simply to raise awareness about perhaps the most important issue that affects our lifetime. Don’t take my word for it; please see the movie.

http://sharethetruth.us will pay for it. Visit and simply post referencing this comment and we’ll secure however much money you need to sit down for 100 minutes you might end up enjoying.

    Thank you for considering this!

Is it any wonder that we have this problem?

As you know I’m in the US at the moment, the waste here is incomprehensible.

    I’ll give you some examples…..

At the hotel I am staying at, the breakfast is served on disposable styrofoam plates/cups/bowls, with disposable plastic cutlery. (Note, this is a decent hotel, not a crappy 2-star)

So calculate. There are 300 rooms in the hotel, so that is potentially 300-600 plastic plates per day. There are over 200 of these hotels in the US following the same procedure of using plastic plates for breakfast.

So, if all the hotels were even only half-full each day, there are over 6000 plastic plates thrown in the bin each DAY in the USA. Just for this hotel!

I’ll give you another example…. People drink coffee. Coffee is hot. Coffee comes in a styrofoam cup.
But because the coffee is hot, people take their coffee in 2 cups, one inside the other to provide extra insulation. (BTW, the coffee tastes like shit, really like shit, but that’s another matter)

And don’t get me started on the cars/driving issue….

So is it any wonder that we have such a problem, when so many of the population in the US don’t even consider the massive impact they are having each day?

Al Gore’s got a huge job to even try to make a change here.

Al Gore brought Climate Change to the masses…

The Sunrise program is now running a cool the globe special, and I get woken every morning at the ungodly hour of 7am to watch it. When Al Gore was interviewed on Sunrise a month or so ago you could see Kochie didn’t really get what he was on about, like it was all new, perhaps even alarmist and politcally motivated. A few months later and he’s quoting from the movie and making the pathetic climate change skeptic argument look ridiculous…

This Stern report (my thoughts here) couldn’t have come at a better time, If I didn’t know better I’d say there’s a greenie conspiracy… this report has brought the impact of climate change to the economy… I’d be interested to here how the report was received in the US???
