Zune + Zune Marketplace officially announced

Microsoft has officially announced Zune.

Nothing much new that we didn’t already know about. Engadget has some info.

There’s also a new video on comingzune.com.

Basically:

  • Available by the end of the year in the US
  • 30GB storage (way too small for a device with video)
  • Does video, audio and photo
  • Interface is theme-able
  • Built-in FM tuner
  • Wifi enabled
  • Comes in 3 colours: black, brown and white
  • Can share “selected” songs with other Zune users (over wifi)
  • 3″ screen

They also announced Zune Marketplace:

  • Competes with iTMS
  • Very focused on community
  • Zune Pass – subscription based store (ie flat fee for use of the entire library)
  • Inital labels on board – DTS, Astralwerks Records, Virgin Records, Ninja Tune, Playlouderecordings, Quango Music Group, Sub Pop Records, and V2/Artemis Records

My thoughts on Zune Marketplace:

  • There is no doubt that the hardware needs to be accompanied by perfect-fit software – iTunes completes iPod
  • I’m not sure what this means for URGE. Having 2 music services is just confusing and unnecessary
  • I’m also not sure what the community aspects will look like
