Hey, wanna buy some DRM?
Hmm, it appears that Jon Johansen is trying to commercialise his reverse engineering skills. Those who don’t remember Jon, among other things, he’s the dude that cracked CSS (Content Scrambling System – the encryption behind DVDs).
According to Liz Gannes from over at GigaOM, John has reverse engineered FairPlay, Apples DRM. He’s now trying to license it out to the commercial market so that Apple competitors can build devices and software that can play FairPlay restricted media.
From the little I understand about the DMCA, it’s illegal to reverse engineer a copy protection measure. So, I’m not sure what the outcome is gonna be here.
Either way, I hope that Apple comes out under at the end of it all and the world becomes even more aware of the stupidity that is Apples DRM model!
