Big Brother Australia 08 live stream in Silverlight

Filed under awesomeness, Big Brother 08 is doing the free version of its live stream in Silverlight this year – check it!

Why? Well it’s simple, they, like many major media companies have truckloads of assets (especially streaming) in WMV. So, in previous years, they’ve been doing it in Windows Media Player.

Now, with the Silverlight doing the client bits, they can have a consistent user experience across Windows and Mac in Firefox, IE and Safari. And even more importantly, they have a client platform that they can build upon and build a truly emmersive media experience.

All without barely having to touch or invest in the backend further.

Kudos to my mates over at Hyro for doing a great job building it and to Channel 10/Southern Star.

Cool….. but, It goes to show that technology cannot improve what is poor subject matter.

no offense but from media strategy point of view your friends are Hyro are pretty incompetent. The fact that they recommended their client (Southern Star) to use Silverlight for a subsection of the site while the everything else on the site runs in Flash doesn’t bout much for their experience in terms usability.

Either make the entire site Silverlight or Flash but to use two technologies (one of which pretty much no one would have installed on their system) is so 1996 it’s not funny.

Oh, and please don’t give me that use the technology which works best for your needs crap. Red Bull managed to stream Flugtag to over 150.000 people live using Flash… you can do live streaming in Flash. Perhaps Hyros’ technical directors haven’t figured it out yet but it can be done.
